Combination of travel and my 10 month old waking up during my writing time (this morning was 4:30am! sleep training tips welcomed…) means I wasn’t trending towards getting a post out this week.
Still, a great message from James Clear in Atomic Habits (and in this great podcast with Tim Ferris) is that even if your habit is 45mins of daily exercise, better to be the person who shows up and does 5mins than skips. So I’m showing up with my “5min workout”-equivalent post (or really two mins). Thank you Blake Robbins for the “don’t give up” encouragement. :)
To be honest, I’ve lasted longer doing this than I expected. If you wonder about whether writing is worth it for you, especially given how much content there already is out there, one of the new unexpected benefits I’ve felt is how focusing it’s been. We’re deluged constantly with things that we could read. I could read articles about AI, web3, politics, twitter/elon gossip, VR, crypto regulation, TikTok, etc. It’s so easy to be a mile wide, an inch deep, letting Twitter dictate the upstream content that forms my downstream thoughts.
So by writing, it forces me to take more control of my attention. I’m curious about something and working through my thinking, and turning the limited bandwidth I have to those things. I’ve been blogging since 2006, but this benefit felt new, probably because two kids means how much time I have to read is dramatically curtailed. Prioritization becomes key.
I know there is a lot of content out there, so if you’ve read this, thank you and definitely let me know anything you’d love me to write about and I’ll see if I can turn my attention there at some point.
Have a great weekend.
